Profile

H.E. Retno L. P. Marsudi was born in Semarang on November 27, 1962. She is the first woman to serve as Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, appointed on October 27, 2014. Retno Marsudi earned her bachelor’s degree from Gadjah Mada University in 1985 in International Relations. She has also attended the study program “European Union Law” at Haagse Hogeschool in The Hague and “Human Rights Studies” at the University of Oslo. Retno Marsudi’s career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs began in 1986. She has served in various positions, including as Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands (2012-2014) and Norway and the Republic of Iceland (2005-2008). Prior to becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs, she served as Director General for the Americas and Europe (2008-2012) and Director for Western Europe (2003-2005).
